1 Kings chapter 17 is the chapter in which God raises up Elijah in the deep darkness of the days of Ahab. Ahab had brought the worship of Baal and Asherah into northern Israel, and the hearts of the people had drifted still further from the law of sacrifice and the way of salvation God had ordained. In such an age God had Elijah proclaim that for years there would be neither rain nor dew. This was God’s rebuke, revealing that Baal is not a god who gives rain and abundance but a vain idol.
