In the northern nation of Israel, Ahab the son of Omri became king. This Ahab, who ruled northern Israel from Samaria for twenty-two years, did more evil than all who were before him. He regarded following the sin of Jeroboam as rather a trivial thing; he took as his wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, served and worshiped Baal, set up an altar for Baal, and made a wooden image of Asherah. And so, the Word testifies, he provoked the anger of the LORD God of Israel more severely than all the kings of Israel in their generations.
