Today’s Scripture passage is about what happens if we fellowship with heretics. King Jeroboam did many evil things before God in order to keep his kingship by himself. One of them was that he exchanged God for golden calves; another was that he ignored God’s command and changed the date of the Day of Atonement; and besides these, he destroyed the office of the Levitical priests whom God had specially established, so that anyone, even a common person, could become a priest if he volunteered. So today’s passage tells us how the wrath of God comes down on those who remain in that line of faith and on their families. We must also consider with what resolve we ourselves ought to carry on our life of faith.
